A kayak trip
around the Farne Islands is regarded by many sea kayakers to be one
of the classic sea paddles of Britain. Situated off the
Northumberland Coast near Bamburgh the islands offer paddlers a lead
in to more intermediate and advanced journeying on the sea. There
are numerous islands to explore, with bird and seal colonies abound.
Approaching Inner Farne you are presented with cliffs teaming with
bird life. The islands are recognised as one of the most important
bird sites and sanctuary’s in the United Kingdom with Puffins,
Shags, Guillemots, Cormorants, Eider Ducks, Kittiwakes and Arctic
Terns to name a few of the many species which nest on the island
group. The Grey (Atlantic)
Seal is
to be found on the Farne islands. Whilst paddling through the island
group we are fortunate to view one of the rarest seals in the world
in one of the only breeding places on the east coast of Britain.
The get in and
get out for the trip is on Bamburgh beach in the shadow of Bamburgh
Castle. From here the group paddled between the islands taking in
Farne Island (Inner Farne), Staple Island, Brownsman, North and
South Wamses to Longstone. At Longstone in the shadow of the
lighthouse the party landed for a lunch break and to take in the
magnificent views of the Northumbrian
coastline.
For many in
the group this was their first trip around the Farne Islands. They
all enjoyed the experience and for many it was a highlight in their
paddling year. It will not be their last visit to the
islands!!
